Wheat Wallenborn is a very special new member to the Rotary Club of Smith Mountain Lake. He has been a Rotarian for more than 40 years and has a perfect attendance for meetings and functions during his time in membership. That is quite an achievement in itself, but is not the reason that he is so special to the local club. While belonging to the Rotary Club of Roanoke, Wallenborn was a participant on the committee that developed and chartered the Smith Mountain Lake club.
Wallenborn recalls working with Rotary District 7570 officials to initiate a petition to start a club at the lake. The initial chartering took place on December 12, 1990 at the Westlake Golf and Country Club, where the club currently meets. He says that he has watched the club’s activity over the years and likes the “hands on” approach to community and international projects that is a cornerstone of the club’s activities. That plus the high cost of commuting to Roanoke for weekly club meetings helped him make the decision to join SML Rotary.
Dave English, club president, said; “We have known Mr. Wallenborn for some time as a guest at our meetings and are glad to have him on board.”
