The Rotary Club of Smith Mountain Lake at its 9th Annual “Excellence in Education” Banquet presented the Smith Mountain Lake Rotary Scholarship of $750 to Mattie Green of Franklin County High School and to Kelsie Proehl of Staunton River High School. Mattie Green has been admitted to James Madison University and wants to become a speech language rehabilitation therapist. Kelsey Proehl has been admitted to Central Virginia Community College and will subsequently transfer to Virginia Tech for a degree in Agricultural science or Dairy science. Students will receive a second year scholarship of $750 provided they maintain a 3.0 GPA in the first year. The Rotary scholarship to the FCHS student is given in memory of Alex Ernandes. Tim Ernandes, Alex’s father, provided inspiring comments about his son and Mattie Green.
