Dr. Brian Unwin, a geriatric medicine specialist with Carilion Hospital, spoke to  members of the SML Rotary Club about healthy aging at the club’s May 28, 2015, meeting.  Dr. Unwin is also trained in  various aspects of aging including dementia and end of life care.

Dr. Unwin spoke about healthy aging and current life expectancy rates in the United States.  According to Dr. Unwin 82 million Americans will be over 65 years of age by 2050  This is a doubling of the current population over 65.

Dr. Unwin indicated that although genetics plays a significant role in life expectancy, the following factors can extend longevity and result in a healthier aging process: don’t smoke, limit alcohol intake to no more than 2 drinks, maintain a healthy weight and exercise at least 150 minutes per week, develop adaptive coping to stress, stable marriage, education level, a positive attitude, and having a vibrant social life including younger friends.
