The Rotary Club of SML has received a matching grant from the District Rotary Foundation to complete construction and upgrading to Professional Disk Golf Association (PDGA) specifications of a disk golf course previously set up by another group at the Moneta Park.  District funds will be matched by funds from the local Rotary Foundation and donations from individuals.  The work will include construction of new concrete tee boxes and the addition of a second set of baskets to allow two distinct courses – the red course and the existing white course.

In addition to its availability to the public now using Moneta Park, the course will allow for sanctioned professional tournaments with an entry fee, thus providing the Rotary Club of SML with yet another fund raising program to assist with ongoing charitable community projects.

Disk golf is one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S., and increasingly popular in the Franklin/Bedford County area.  It is similar to traditional golf except that the ball and club are replaced by a frisbee-like disk that is thrown from a tee box toward a raised basket that averages some 250 feet away.  Each throw is a “stoke” and there is a “par” for each hole.

To better acquaint our membership with the finer details of the game, the Club hosted, as speaker at last week’s regular breakfast meeting, Noah Guthrie, a local Disk Golf Professional.  He is shown (on the right in the attached picture) with the Club’s 2018-19 President, John Stafford.
